The Port is in the process of applying for funding under the State Community Economic Revitalization Board (CERB) Planning Grant program. This potential funding will be used to assist in development of an economic feasibility study for thermally modified wood products manufacturing in Clallam County.

At the Port Commission Meeting scheduled for September 11, 2018 at 1:00 P.M., Port Administration Building, 338 W. First Street, Port Angeles, WA 98362, the Commissioners will consider Resolution 18-1179 authorizing the Executive Director to make a formal application to CERB for $50,000 of funding assistance.

Advanced wood products and cross laminated timber (CLT) manufacturing is an exciting step forward in the timber industry that goes hand in hand with reliable and sustainable timber harvest in our county. CLT panels are constructed by bonding together of layers of dimensional lumber to form massive timber panels. The panels are used in walls, floors and roofs and are a direct cost-effective replacement for steel or concrete construction in many modern structures. Thermally modifying timber (TMT) to enhance stability and performance may increase the feasibility of local coastal timber species usage in the manufacture of CLT.

The proposed economic feasibility study would assess coastal timber species of TMTs and their utility in cross laminated timber, identify potential producers and local manufacturing capacity, and propose ways to overcome startup and barriers to market.

Interested parties may make comment regarding this CERB funding application or other issues during two public comment periods during each commission meeting. Out of respect for everyone attending, speakers are asked to keep their comments to less than three minutes each.
