Port Forgoes Tax Levy in Support of School Levies

At the January 23, 2017 Port Commission meeting, the Board of Commissioner unanimously voted in favor of a motion to support both the Sequim School District’s Educational Programs & Operations Levy Renewal and the Capital Levy and the Port Angeles School District’s Maintenance & Operations Levy.

Representatives from the Port Angeles School District presented the facts about the upcoming Maintenance & Operations Levy at the January 9, 2017 Port Commission meeting.  Representatives from Sequim School District and the Citizens for Sequim Schools presented the facts about their Educational Programs & Operations Levy and their Capital Levy to the Board of Commissioners during the January 23, 2017 Port Commission meeting.  Both school districts requested the Commission’s support and encouraged their vote in favor or their respective levies.

Commission President, Colleen McAleer stated, “The Port Commission declined to increase the Port’s levy for the specific reason of wanting to support the school districts with their upcoming levies.”

“I would support giving the Port’s tax increase to the school if that action were possible,” said Commission Vice President, Connie Beauvais.

In November of 2016, the Port Commission voted unanimously not to increase their tax levy.

The Port of Port Angeles Commission collectively asserts that in order to achieve its vision of a prosperous Clallam County, there must be strong schools which are an essential component of a strong economy and economic growth for our communities.

The Sequim School District and Port Angeles School District levies will both be on the ballot on February 14, 2017.
