Log Ship Arrives at Port’s Terminal One

March 09, 2010

The first log ship the Port has had at berth in ten years, the MV Koombana Bay, arrived at 4am yesterday morning to load approximately two million board feet bound for South Korea to support their building trades.  The log ship will berth at Terminal 1 through Wednesday and then it will sail down to Longview to load more cargo.

The Port’s Log Yard crew has been very busy stockpiling wood for the last month or so from Merrill & Ring.  The logs have now been dumped into the water to be loaded aboard the Koombana Bay by ILWU Local 27’s union members.

The Port’s Marine Terminal Manager, Mike Nimmo says, “While it’s too soon to say that log ships might become ‘regulars’ again, it sure is nice to see the MV Koombana Bay here supporting our regions’ timber industry.”  The next log ship is scheduled to arrive in the approximately six weeks.
