Water-based Transportation

Water-based Transportation

Clallam County’s location on the Strait of Juan de Fuca makes transporting goods by water convenient. All the necessary services are available here to facilitate water transportation and Port of Port Angeles is noted as a location where vessel repair and maintenance can take place without deviating from major shipping lanes.

Port of Port Angeles has five deep-water berths capable of handling vessels up to 1,200 feet in length. The depth at the berths can accommodate vessels with draft up to 45 feet. A 300-ton Travellift is also available at the marine terminal.

Barge Capabilities

Regional barge companies provide “on call” service for transportation of goods from Port Angeles to other Puget Sound and Northwest destinations. Regularly scheduled barge service has been explored by Port of Port Angeles and plans are in development to provide barge service should the need arise in the future. The Port has found that for small cargo movements, truck hauling can often be more cost effective. If a company has specific cargo needs, the Port is ready to assist in finding the most economical and timely transportation method.

Ferry Service

The Olympic Peninsula is connected by a network of ferry systems, along with major highway systems, to the metropolitan areas of Puget Sound, as well as Vancouver Island, Canada. The reliable Washington State Ferry system provides convenient access to the Seattle area with vessels leaving either side of Puget Sound approximately every 45 minutes from early morning to late evening daily. Ferry transportation is in high demand, and therefore no ferry route is ever completely out of commission.
